Hey Friends! So this week in Fandom Fashion, I wanted to focus and review the new Harry Potter Vans collaboration. The line launched late last night, and I’ve been seeing people talking about their favorite pieces and styles all over Instagram. To be honest, as soon as I saw the email that the collection was live, I went shopping. Every house at least has one shoe style and a top, each design very different, representing the style of the house. Gryffindor is very sporty, Slytherin more fashionable, Ravenclaw classic, and Hufflepuff on the more simple side.
Being a huge Harry Potter fan, I was anticipating the release of this line. I don’t have any fandom inspired shoes, since most of the pieces I collect or see for purchase are tops. As fandom fashion demand increase, we are seeing more brand collaborations and options available. I decided to only purchase one pair of shoes since I am on a budget (life of an entrepreneur starting out). I went with the Daily Prophet design, since that was the style of shoe I will wear often, and a versatile design that i can pair with more outfits. Being a Gryffindor, I of course wanted the Gryffindor house shoes, but personally, I’m not a big fan of high tops. I liked them for my Chuck Taylors when I was younger, but now, I’m not a big fan. Anyways, I really love the Daily Prophet style so I went with that pair. I cannot wait to get them and start matching them with my outfits.
Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw
Both Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw only have two house specific designs each. For those who identify with these houses, it’s a little disappointing to get the short end of the stick. From a marketing view, it makes sense because Gryffindor and Slytherin probably have higher sales, but every time I read comments from fans and consumers, there’s a lot of disappointment since they feel under represented. Designers should definitely take that into consideration, and make sure they balance the designs.
For the actual designs, I personally like the simplicity of the Hufflepuff with the house crest and the classic checker Vans look for Ravenclaw. I would have loved to see each house have a basic slip on with the crest, and house colors checked shoes to go with the more elaborate house design. There could have been more effort to create a fashion forward piece for both Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.
Gryffindor and Slytherin
So we these houses, we see a little bit more options with the pieces. Gryffindor inspired shoes have sizes for adults, kids, and toddlers. There is a sporty unisex tee, socks, and back pack. For the Gryffindor shoe, the design is very sporty, which is a typically association with the house. I do love the suede and house colors stripe combination on this design.
Slytherin shoe design is on point with representation for the house. The snake skin elements on the fabric give the shoe a classy high fashion feel to the design, which is very Slytherin. This is probably one of my favorite pieces of the collection.
Deathly Hallows, Marauder’s Map, and other Icon Designs
With the icons, we see the most diversity in designs. There are shoes, sandals, and tees for the Deathly Hallows, slip-ons for the Marauder’s map, and cute tops with all the houses represented on them. I love how they incorporated the essence of the fandom with the brand identity of Vans.
Something I thought was brilliant was the option to customize some of the shoes. You can pick between the slip-ons and the lace ups, and choose icon patterns and color schemes. This is a great way to engage consumers and allow them to create a piece just for them.
This collection overall is fantastic. There are some awesome pieces that really capture this fandom. I am so excited to get the pair I ordered. Comment below with the pieces you purchased, and give me your thoughts on this collaboration!
